For those who haven’t seen it, “Idiocracy” is a 2006 film made by Mike Judge (creator of Beavis & Butthead) that was released quietly but developed a cult following for its cutting satire of modern times. It’s the story of Mr Average (Joe) who volunteers to escape his hopelessly average life by taking part in an army experiment to cryogenically freeze subjects for a year. Only the experiment goes wrong and he is forgotten about, only waking up 500 years later.

But the kick is that after 500 years, the human race hasn’t got better and evolved, it has de-volved. Natural selection hasn’t rewarded those who are the stongest and fittest, just those who have bred the most. It’s a hilarious and insightful comedy about mr average suddenly becoming the most intelligent man on the planet overnight.

My favourite quote:

“Some had high hopes that genetic engineering would correct this trend in evolution, but sadly the greatest minds and resources were focused on conquering hair loss and prolonging erections.”

In this clip, Joe wakes up for the first time in 2505 wondering where he is during ‘batin hour on the masturbation and violence channel, before being sent to prison for “looking like a fag” after a butt examination and finding out drinking water has been replaced with Gatorade. He visits a local hospital to speak to a doctor smoking a cigarette, whose incisive medical diagnosis turns out to be “Hey, how’s it hangin’ Ese, i don’t wanna sound like a dick or nothin’, but it says on your chart that you’re fucked up. You talk like a fag and you’re shit’s all retarded.”
